Brown Upsets Providence For Head Coach Chase Wileman’s First Win With Bears – Brospar Daily News

The Browns men’s soccer team defeated Providence 1-0 on Saturday night, marking Browns president of men’s soccer Chase Wellman’s first career win as head coach.

“It was an amazing result tonight,” Wellman said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the program. We have great respect for Providence. We came here with a plan and a clear strategy to try to limit their chances. Tonight, I just thought these guys executed the game plan perfectly. “I’m so proud of them and all the hard work we’ve put in.”

The win was Brown’s first win over Providence since 2018 and his first road game against the Friars since 2015.

In stark contrast to the first game of the season, the Bears were beaten, took fewer corners than their opponents, but still managed to clinch the win.

The only goal of the game came in the 15th minute when Scott Gustafson hit a long ball from the left to Jamin Gogo Peters. Gogo Peters split the two defenders on their way into the 18-yard box, worked towards the finish line and fired a six-man cross that deflected off a Friar defender’s chest and into the net.

That’s all the Bears need as they lock down the defense in a 1-0 win the rest of the way.

The Friars held the lead with 19-2, 7-1 shooting and a 7-2 corner.

Conor Smith was brilliant on target for Brown, making seven saves for his first career win and his first career suspension.

“Honestly, it’s the proudest day I’ve had in football,” Wilman said. “I just think those guys covered every inch of that turf. They fought, they fought, they blocked shots. It was a fantastic result, now we just have to follow through and try to maintain it for the rest of the season.

The Bears will be back on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 p.m. against UMass Lowell for their first home game of the season at Stevenson-Pinsings Field.
