Etiquette expert on how to handle ‘guilt tipping’ – Brospar Daily News

Tip for service or guilt? With all the digital transactions we do these days, many people face a dilemma. Modern etiquette expert Diane Goetzman calls it a “guilty move.” When paying through a touchscreen, it’s normal not to know who you’re giving extra money to, she said. The key, Goetzman said, is to prep the iPad before it spins. Think about your relationship with the staff and the amount of extra work involved in the transaction. If the employee is paid hourly, no tip is required. But it’s good. But if you’re in a relationship with an individual, it literally changes the equation. “If you go somewhere every day and they call you by name, ask you about your kids, or you know how their tennis match is going, then you’re building that relationship and you might feel obligated to leave them something. But if you walk in, they’ll give you a coffee, and you don’t want to tip, you don’t click on a custom tip,” Gottman said. Bottom line: iPad tip is okay in most places, but not required. Bottom line: iPad tips in most places are nice, but not required.
