Ex-footballer died after choking on food in restaurant

Neil Campbell started his career at York City before playing for Scarborough, Southend United and Doncaster Rovers. He was an assistant coach at Sonnaby Football Club last year.

The 45-year-old – known as ‘Cammy’ – died on April 30, prompting grief from devastated family and friends, Live coverage from Teesside.

An inquest into the circumstances of his death was held at Teesside Coroner’s Court on Thursday.

The court heard that Neil choked during Saturday’s Thirsk game while having dinner with friends at Uno Ristorante in Yam.

Teesside and Hartlepool Deputy Coroners Karin Welsh have concluded a witness report. She said: “The day he died he had been out socializing and then returned to the North East to eat. It seemed like he suddenly had a problem with a piece of food, and despite his best efforts, he couldn’t be saved.

Addressing the family, Coroner Wales said: ‘I cannot imagine what you have all been through and it is clear that Neil has lived a full life not only through his physical activity but also through his teaching. .

“It’s a lesson for all of us about the precious nature of life.”

His death was recorded as accidental.

A funeral in May heard the former footballer’s life story and his passion for the game since he was a child.

Relatives say he fulfilled his dream and changed the lives of thousands of children in Middlesbrough.

Andy Campbell, who paid tribute to his brother in May, who also had a successful footballing career and played for Middlesbrough FC, said: “For me he has the full package. I see it all because I see it in all areas of life.

“He is always mischievous, always happy to laugh. If he’s here now, he’ll try to make it a little fun, try to make people laugh and joke and smile. There is so much sadness in the world that he is trying to turn it around. One of the good guys in the situation.

“I will never say that word, but he is, was and always will be my hero.”
