COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – As Labor Day weekend approaches, travelers are already on their way. Gasoline prices and traffic conditions remain annual concerns.
According to AAA, the national average cost of gasoline is about $3.81 per gallon. The average cost of a gallon of gasoline in South Carolina is around $3.43 per gallon. It’s been nearly 30 cents a gallon for a month.
Aaron Hawkins and his family were en route from North Carolina to Hilton Head Island and were happy to see gas prices drop.
“Actually, it was definitely a shock. We were around $3.70 to $3.80, and it was a surprise to see $3.30 in South Carolina. I always knew it was cheaper, but not that cheap,” Hawkins said.
With petrol prices falling, MRT support services manager Hellena Bowman said she expected a lot of people to be on the road.
“Boy, it’s going to be a weekend!” So we’re definitely going to get some traffic here. We’re going to have a lot of traffic, probably through Monday,” Bowman said.
Matt Smith of Hilton Head Christian Academy said he and his group of high school students tried to avoid traffic on Labor Day weekend.
“We chose to come earlier this time because the traffic last year was so bad. It took us about eight hours to get back,” Smith said.
AAA also reported that domestic bookings for cars, flights, tours and cruises were up 22% from a year ago.
