Lea Michele Makes ‘Funny Girl’ Debut Tonight Free Of Critics (For Now) – Deadline

exclusive: Lea Michele will make her public debut in Fanny Brice on Broadway funny girl Tonight, but don’t expect a review tomorrow. A production spokesperson told Deadline exclusively that while critics will be invited to review — or rather review — the musical and its new star, they won’t be invited for a few weeks.

According to the spokesperson, producers will wait to open the show to reviews once the entire company, including Michele and Tovah Feldshuh, who play Ms. Bryce, have a “brief moment to perform together.” As Michele and Feldshuh begin the show tonight, some of the other main cast members are still on leave and the whole company is not in place due to some of the current Covid cases.

A critical review schedule will be established in the coming weeks, and critics could be invited to the show at the end of September.

Critics are rarely asked to review Broadway productions, with or without cast changes, but individual requests for invitations are considered.

For Michele, however, the interest from critics and audiences is very high for a number of reasons – the controversy surrounding the production and the early departure of original star Beanie Feldstein, not to mention lukewarm reviews from Feldstein and the no Tony nominations. Critics and audiences alike are no doubt curious if the revival can generate the plaudits of a musical that has all but disappeared in recent weeks, let alone a box office hit.

Of course, there’s nothing stopping eager critics from buying tickets before invitations go out, but critics are generally willing to experience an edited performance under the best possible circumstances, with a full cast and a company ready, able and fully rehearsed to provide the best effort.

Along with the new company members, there would be some minor production tweaks, including the new addition of Fanny Bryce’s song “I’d Rather Be Blue on You” sung by Barbra Streisand in the film version. Only now is it part of the current stage of production.

In a sense, Michelle received the “preview” period normally only available to the original cast. The only difference is that there won’t be a new official opening night for the replacement cast, which will include not only Michelle, but Feldshuk, who takes over from Jane Lynch. There are no plans for a second opening night, and there will be no red carpet for Michelle’s first show tonight. The official opening date of the event funny girl The resumption will take place on April 24, 2022.
