Predicted Chelsea lineup to face Salzburg in Champions League

Chelsea management have strangely sacked Thomas Tuchel from management after the club’s humiliating defeat to European minnows Dinamo Zagreb. Their new boss, Todd Boley, has been widely criticized for making such a premature decision and the pressure is now set to fall on Graham Potter, who has quit his job at Brighton to become the Blues’ next boss.

The West London derby against Fulham was called off following the Queen’s death last weekend. Porter therefore has a few more days to get to know his players and make plans before hosting Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night. They must win this match to avoid further trouble in the Champions League and regain their confidence ahead of next Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.

Chelsea’s predicted 3-5-2 side to face RB Salzburg

Despite being a substitute for Édouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga showed his spark against Dinamo Zagreb in midweek. Mendy has struggled lately and the Spaniard is expected to keep his place in the upcoming matches.

Porter enjoyed great success at Brighton with a ‘back three’ formation. He is unlikely to make the same change at Stamford Bridge, but in the meantime he will have to put Thiago Silva back at the heart of the defence. Leicester City’s huge rookie Wesley Fofana is set to move to the right, while veteran Kalidou Koulibaly has a strained life after completing his summer move from Napoli. He needs to improve his performance after he starts.

Reece James has been the only bright spot in this Chelsea squad for the past few years, and the lethal right-winger must commit to transforming through his predatory running, crossing, linking and shooting attributes. Ben Chilwell should be recognized by Marc Cucurella, although the latter thrived under Porter during his time at Brighton.

N’Golo Kante’s injury absence is a blow for the Blues but they still have players like Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho who should play a role in midfield given their experience and midfield expertise. Mason Mount hasn’t been in his usual form lately, but a progressive midfield role could help him rediscover his form and shake off the recent chaos.

Raheem Sterling has scored several goals so far this season, and the former Liverpool and Manchester City striker is set to play alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Armando Broja, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz remain other attacking options that could come later in the game.
