Serena loses at US Open; could be last match – Brospar Daily News

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams lost the final match of her illustrious tennis career on Friday night to a third-round match at the US Open by Adjera Thom. Ajla Tomljanovic eliminated 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1 in front of the electric crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams, reluctant to leave quietly, delayed five match points to extend the more than three hours of play as some spectators watched, camera phones at the ready. No one – except Tomljanovic, of course – wants this to end.

That was true for Tomljanovic’s sixth chance, when Williams scored.

Williams, who turns 41 this month, recently told the world she was ready to begin an ‘evolution’ away from her playing days – she doesn’t like the word ‘retirement’ – even though she deliberately disagrees this time in Flushing May Whether or not Doss appearance will definitely represent his last game, everyone thinks it will.

If this is indeed the last hurrah, she is taking her fans on an exciting return tour to the hard-court championships, the site of six of her 23 major championships. The first time was in New York in 1999, when Williams was just 17.

But she faltered against Australian Tomjanovic, 29, ranked 46th. Williams gave up the lead in every set, including the final set, where she went 1-0 in the last six.
