Carthage, North Carolina – A detained suspect who had locked himself in a trailer park opened fire on officers during the confrontation, the Southern Pines Police Department said.
Just before 4.30pm on Friday, police said officers attended a home in Sandy Pines Mobile Home Park near Easter Camp Road to conduct a wellness check on a subject that threatened to harm him.
When officers arrived at the scene, police said they encountered 36-year-old Michael Anthony Buchalla, who had escaped from police to the mobile home where he was living.
During negotiations with Buchara, police said he shot officers from inside the mobile home.
At some point during the negotiations, according to a press release, Bucchara left the mobile home with an assault rifle and took it with him.

Police then attempted to subdue Buchara with less lethal bullets, to no avail. He returned to the mobile home for at least an hour.
Ultimately, police said, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident by breaking into the mobile home with an armored vehicle and deploying “chemical munitions.”
Buchara then left the mobile home and was detained.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.
After the incident, investigators searched the mobile home and seized 24 firearms.
